Auckland with Kids
Family days, handled.
Rainy-day play centres, sunshine adventures, animal encounters and the cafés that actually welcome small humans — the Auckland playbook for parents.
The playgrounds that earn a Saturday morning — proper toilets, café nearby, shade in summer, equipment for more than one age. A hidden Henderson playground with three climbing towers, a flying fox and a sand area, in a park that was the county's first camping ground back in 1925. One of Auckland's best destination playgrounds — genuinely high slides, a climbable lizard, bongo drums and wandering pūkeko, right next to the zoo and the lake. A proper outing in its own right. Arguably one of Auckland's best playgrounds — staggered slides, sand and water play, an in-ground trampoline, BBQs and hammocks, with Takapuna Beach right there. A full family day out without moving the car. One of Auckland's best destination playgrounds, right on the Devonport waterfront — a magnificent lighthouse tower climbing frame, a bucket-and-chain sand lift, trampolines and swings, all under mature pōhutukawa with the city skyline behind. Adventure parks, mini golf, treetop courses and the family beaches worth the drive on a fine day. Ngataringa Skate Park in Devonport is a sunny, open skate space with skyline views — ideal for younger skaters, with great spectating if you come prepared. The highest cone on the North Shore, a steep ten-minute climb, and a 360 over the harbour, the city and Rangitoto. Free, and hard to beat. A 50,000-year-old volcanic headland at the entrance to Auckland's harbour, with a network of WWI and WWII tunnels, bunkers and gun emplacements still open to explore. Free entry, great views of Rangitoto and the city, and a local cardboard sledding tradition the kids will love. Auckland's biggest and best skatepark, on the edge of Victoria Park by the CBD — two bowls, street elements, basketball courts alongside, and free shaded parking under the overpass. A gorgeous sandy North Shore beach with pōhutukawa shade, and a tidal splash pool. Devonport's sheltered, shelly family beach with unbeatable Rangitoto views — a summer pontoon, low-tide rock pools to Narrow Neck, and the Vauxhall shops steps from the shaded Arawa Street parkin Trampoline parks, soft-play, climbing walls and the indoor pools that turn a wet Saturday into a good one. A big inflatables floor, a play zone over the arcade, and ten-pin upstairs — best with two or more kids, and free customer parking. A stunning piece of Auckland's heritage that you can actually swim in. The Tepid Baths opened in December 1914 as a grand Edwardian bathhouse on… The zoo, the aquarium, the working farms and the wildlife encounters that genuinely surprise kids. A lakeside loop with an epic playground, endless birdlife, and a free heritage tram linking it to the Zoo and MOTAT — one of Western Springs' best free days out. A proper working farm on 20 hillside acres in Henderson Valley — feed alpacas and donkeys, ride a 1962 tractor, hold baby animals in the Nursery Shed. Everything included in the entry price. Auckland Zoo is one of New Zealand's most loved family destinations — 1,400 animals, 135 species, and 17 hectares of award-winning habitats just minutes from central Auckland. Home to the world's best Orangutan habitat, a walk-in kiwi enclosure, and a legendary dragon playground loved by generations of Auckland kids. Museums kids actually want to visit, science centres, art workshops, and the holiday programmes worth booking early. A genuinely beautiful free library in Windsor Reserve — a winter fire, terracotta ferry tiles, and a circular window you can sit right inside. One of the finest museums in the Southern Hemisphere, free for Auckland residents. Māori taonga, natural history, war memorial, Hall of Curiosities and Volcano exhibition — allow at least three hours. Combine with the free Winter Gardens next door for a full day out. One of New Zealand's oldest continuously operating factories — heritage sugar mill tours, the Chelsea Bay Train ride past the sugar mountain, the Edmonds Baking School, and a waterfront café with one of the most underrated views in Auckland.Worth the Journey
