Auckland War Memorial Museum | Tāmaki Paenga Hira
Why go
One of the finest museums in the Southern Hemisphere, the Auckland War Memorial Museum sits on the hill of Pukekawa within the Auckland Domain, looking out over the city it has served since 1929. For Aucklanders it's free — make sure you grab a MyMuseum card. Three floors of permanent galleries cover Māori and Pacific taonga, natural history and New Zealand's military past, alongside rotating major exhibitions. Easy to pair with lunch or dinner at Tuitui Bistro in the south atrium, or a five-minute walk through the Domain to the Auckland Domain Wintergardens. Whether you're an Aucklander rediscovering the city or a visitor with half a day to spare, this is one of the essential Auckland experiences.
What to expect
The Māori galleries hold some of the most significant taonga in the country, including a full-size wharenui and a carved waka taua. The war memorial floor is quietly devastating — a beautifully considered tribute to the lives lost, and one of the most moving public spaces in Auckland. For families, the Hall of Curiosities and the Volcano exhibition are both hits with younger visitors. The Volcano exhibition includes an interactive earthquake experience that tends to be a highlight for kids — expect a queue on busy days. The Hall of Curiosities is genuinely immersive but can feel overstimulating when the museum is busy, regardless of age — on peak weekend days an early start is recommended.
Two cafes on site. 1929 Espresso Bar takes its name from the year the museum opened and sits in the neo-classical Grand Foyer at the north entrance — a hole-in-the-wall cafe serving muffins, cakes, pastries, pies, sandwiches and wraps, plus coffee, frappes, smoothies and juices. Open daily until 4pm. The more upmarket option is Tuitui Museum Bistro & Café in the south atrium — a full sit-down bistro, licensed bar, NZ classics on the menu, and a Kiwi High Tea worth booking ahead for. You don't need a museum ticket to eat at Tuitui.
Extend the day at the Wintergardens. A five-minute walk through the Domain brings you to the Auckland Domain Wintergardens — two stunning Victorian glasshouses (one tropical, one temperate) with a sunken courtyard between them. Free entry, open daily. The adjacent Wintergarden Pavilion Café sits above the duck pond and is a lovely spot for breakfast or lunch in a relaxed outdoor setting.
