Devonport Library
Why go
Devonport Library is a beautiful public building that people visit for the building. It sits in Windsor Reserve a minute from the ferry, and on a cold day it's warm, and inviting— free, open to everyone, and genuinely beautiful. A Māori carving spans the entrance doors above you as you go in. Turn right and there's a long gas fire going through winter, deep sofas around it, and a row of terracotta tiles on the ledges above — each one a different Devonport ferry, name and dates pressed into the clay. Further in, towards the back left an enormous circular window is set into the wall, cushions available and deep enough to climb into and sit, level with the tree canopy outside. Go for the window if nothing else!
What to expect
A library that works as a destination rather than an errand. The children's area at the back is exceptionally well thought out — cosy reading nooks built, low round tables, red elephant stools, bean bags, and bead-threading and puzzles for the ones too young for books. The kids' collection is strong. Adults get quiet corners, free wi-fi and enough natural light that it feels warm. The ground-floor community room can be booked for meetings and looks out to the street and the water.
