Why go

Western Springs is one of those Auckland parks that quietly has everything — a proper lake walk, an epic playground, and a free heritage tram running along its edge — all wrapped between the Zoo on one side and MOTAT on the other. You can easily fold all three into one day, and the tram that links them is free for everyone, no ticket needed

What to expect

The walk around the lake is the heart of it: flat, easy, and full of birdlife — swans, geese and ducks, plenty of them. It's a favourite spot for feeding the birds, though the Council now asks people to skip the bread (more on that below). You'll catch glimpses of the back of MOTAT and the back of Auckland Zoo as you loop round. Toward the northern end you'll reach the small Fukuoka Garden — a compact Japanese garden gifted by Auckland's sister city, worth a look but modest in size, with two ways in: one from the Zoo car park side, and another just inside the park as you head toward the playground. Just past it is the big playground, which is genuinely one of the better ones in the city.

Good to know

The free MOTAT heritage tram runs the Western Springs Tramway — free for everyone, no ticket needed — daily 10am–4pm
It runs between the MOTAT Great North Road entrance and the Aviation Hall on Motions Road, stopping at Auckland Zoo along the way; ask for the Western Springs Lakeside Entrance stop (a request stop) to get straight into the park
Tram timetables vary — check MOTAT's site or ask at the ticket counter
Paid parking at the Aviation Hall on Motions Road, at the Zoo car park (fills up fast), and at MOTAT — park at any and tram in
Free parking on Motions Road, by the Zoo car park entrance
Free parking on Great North Road too — but it's a bus lane 7–10am Monday to Friday, so only park there outside those hours
Free parking at the Western Springs Community Hall on Great North Road, across from the park — handy, but it gets busy
Feeding the birds: Auckland Council signs ask you to skip the bread — it rots in the water and can make the birds sick. Seeds and grain are better, and feed them on the grass, not in the water
Mind the tram line if you're crossing from the street side into the park
Fukuoka Garden has limited opening hours — check ahead if it's a must-see
