Why go

Takapuna Beach playground is arguably one of Auckland's best — and with the beach, barbecues, hammocks and shade trees right alongside it, it's a full family day out without driving anywhere twice.

What to expect

The playground itself is exceptional. Slides are staggered in height so even cautious kids can work their way up — the tallest are genuinely adventurous. There's confidence course-style climbing netting at height, an in-ground trampoline, a hamster wheel, seesaws and a dedicated area for smaller kids including a pushable train on a metal track that does laps — parents will be on circular duty for longer than they'd like, but kids are completely sold on it. The sand and water play area is a highlight and gets very busy on sunny days. Everything you'd want is here.

Beyond the playground, the setting does a lot of the work. BBQ facilities with tables and chairs, deck seating, hammocks, picnic tables — and then the beach itself, framed by big shade trees, with the option to move between sun and shade at will. Toilets and changing facilities are large, clean and right on the playground edge.

On a sunny day, Duck Island is a five minute walk to Hurstmere Road — well worth it. Alternatively, walk the beach all the way to Takapuna Beach Cafe, also award-winning for ice cream, and walk back along the sand.

Good to know

Gets significantly busier than quieter North Shore options like Windsor Reserve in Devonport — on a sunny weekend, stay alert if tracking multiple kids across a large space.
Parking directly adjacent is paid.
Shore City car park offers two hours free, a seven minute walk to the playground — good for shorter visits.
Toilets and changing facilities are large, clean and right on the playground edge.
