Mount Victoria (Takarunga) | Volcanic Summit & Panoramic Views
Why go
Takarunga (Mount Victoria) in Devonport is one of the best free viewpoints in Auckland, and the climb takes about as long as a coffee. From the summit you get a full 360 — the Waitematā, the city skyline, Rangitoto, out across the Hauraki Gulf. It's a steep little climb, short enough that you're up before you've really started complaining, and the view at the top earns every step.
What to expect
A proper climb rather than a stroll — steep enough that you'll feel it, brief enough that it doesn't matter. Takarunga is the highest volcanic cone on the North Shore. The summit is layered with history. Māori built pā on these cones for the height and the volcanic soil, ideal for kūmara, and terraces and storage pits are still visible on the northern slopes. Then there are the toadstools. Scattered across the summit is a grid of ventilation ducts, painted red and white like fairy mushrooms, marking the reservoir underneath. Local legend has it an anonymous artist painted them overnight, the council painted over them, and they came back — until the council gave up. Whether or not that's how it went, they're still there.
