Cheltenham Beach
Why go
Cheltenham Beach is one of Devonport's most loved spots — a sheltered, shelly beach with completely unobstructed views across to Rangitoto that never get old. The swimming pontoon just offshore is a summer rite of passage, and the calm water makes it one of the best beaches on the Shore for young children. A quintessential Devonport afternoon.
What to expect
Calm, family-friendly swimming with the pontoon as the main event in summer. At low tide the beach opens right up: from the north end you can pick your way around the rocks to Narrow Neck Beach — kids love hunting sea anemones and crabs in the tide pools on the way, though some of the flat rocks geHeading south takes you around the base of Maungauika / North Head Historic Reserve, and from the southern end keep an eye out for paragliders launching off North Head — quite the sight. At the far north end there's a small park with swings, and dog walkers love the beach year-round.
