Western Springs Park Playground
Why go
The Western Springs playground is one of Auckland's best destination playgrounds — big enough to be a proper outing in its own right, and perfectly placed next to the zoo and Western Springs Lakeside Park for a full family day out.
What to expect
This is not a token playground. The slides are genuinely high — kids with a head for heights will love them, others might need some encouragement. Beyond the slides there's plenty to keep everyone busy: bongo drums, a climbable lizard, spinning seats, swings of various kinds and other climbing apparatus. The wildlife adds to the atmosphere — pūkeko and swans wander through looking for crumbs, which delights smaller kids. Public toilets are conveniently close, tucked against the zoo fence line.
Good to know
Parking requires a plan — the easiest option is the zoo car park (paid).
Free parking on Great North Road outside bus lane and clearway hours, or at the Western Springs Community Hall car park across the road — free but busy.
Makes an excellent addition to a MOTAT visit or a lap of the lake. A genuinely lovely spot.
