Why go

Victoria Park Skatepark is the biggest and best skatepark in Auckland, sitting on the edge of Victoria Park just off the CBD. We've spent whole afternoons here — it's a proper magnet for skateboarders, scooter riders and rollerbladers of every level, and it hums with energy most afternoons. When the legs finally give out, the huge green sweep of Victoria Park is right there for a kick around or a picnic.

What to expect

Two large skate bowls and three two-way ramps — two down the bowl end, one over by the street section — plus a run of street elements: rails, ledges and ramps for anyone working on technical tricks. Basketball courts sit alongside the skate area, so groups with mixed interests can make a full afternoon of it. It's busy after school and on weekends, and the standard ranges from first-timers to seriously good locals.

Good to know

Free parking under the State Highway overpass — shaded, keeps the car cool in summer, but fills fast; paid parking further towards the docks if it's full
Two public toilets next to the basketball courts
Young Guns Skateboarding run holiday programmes here a couple of times a week in the school holidays, for ages 5–13 — a brilliant supervised way in for beginners
Free, no booking — just turn up
