The Engine Room
Why go
Some restaurants come and go. The Engine Room just keeps getting better. Open since 2006, this husband-and-wife-run neighbourhood bistro has been one of the most consistently excellent restaurants on Auckland's North Shore for nearly two decades — and the fact that it's still hard to get a table tells you everything you need to know. Natalia Schamroth and Carl Koppenhagen spent their careers working in hospitality in New Zealand and overseas before finding a beautiful old post office in Northcote Point and turning it into their dream neighbourhood restaurant. That origin story still shows in how the place feels — genuinely personal, warmly run, and staffed by people who clearly care. It's earned the word institution.
What to expect
The food is seasonal bistro — local produce, honest technique, and dishes that are tied to memory as much as flavour. The goat's cheese soufflé is the flagship dish and the reason alone to visit. The menu changes with the seasons but the quality never does. This isn't somewhere you go for a quick bite; it's a lingering meal, a proper night out.
The room has the energy that good restaurants generate naturally — packed tables, glasses clinking, staff moving with purpose, the smell of good food. It's alive in the way that only places with genuine soul tend to be. The Engine Room has published a 600-page cookbook, won numerous awards, and built a loyal community of regulars who've been coming for years.
