About

Bar Magda is one of Auckland’s best kept secrets — a basement bar with an unassuming entrance tucked off K Road, the kind of place that rewards those who seek it out. Head downstairs and you’ll find a warm, intimate space with a distinctly underground vibe and a kitchen that punches well above its weight.

The food is modern Filipino — and chef Carlo is deliberate about that distinction. This isn’t pan-Asian or a fusion collective picking highlights from across the region. It’s a specialised cuisine rooted in Filipino heritage, executed with genuine intent and creativity. Carlo’s recent travels through the Philippines and Malaysia have fed directly into the latest menu — his biggest overhaul to date — where signatures have been refined, new dishes explore bold combinations with practiced restraint, and the direction is firmly forward-thinking. Standouts include the parmesan custard, crab and prawn lumpia, pork and tuna sugaw and gnocchi. The food is designed for sharing, which means you get to try more of the menu.

The room has had a refresh too — black tablecloths and warmer table lamps that let the colours and textures of the dishes pop without losing the moody basement atmosphere that makes Bar Magda feel like a genuine find. The service remains exactly what it’s always been: friendly, professional, and warm. The kind of team that remembers your face and makes you feel like a regular from the first visit.

The cocktails are excellent and the bar stays open late on Fridays and Saturdays, making it one of the better late-night options in the city. Private dining is available — email hi@barmagda.co.nz.

Insider tip: The entrance is easy to miss — look for 25B Cross Street off K Road and head downstairs. Weeknights are the pick if you want a more relaxed experience and time to really talk through the food with the team. Book ahead on weekends.
