Why go

The Avondale Sunday Market is one of Auckland's best spots to stock up on fresh Asian produce — stall after stall of vegetables, fruit, eggs and fish at prices that make the supermarket feel like a rip-off. Come early, and come with a bag.

What to expect

The main event is the produce. Asian greengrocers dominate, each with their own speciality — one stall for leafy greens, another piled high with tropical fruit, a dedicated egg stall with tray upon tray, and a busy fishmonger doing brisk trade. Beyond the food there's a smattering of secondhand goods, dupe designer bits, plastic toys and the occasional genuine find — including what looked like a lovely Polynesian/Pacific clothing stall worth a browse. It's not a curated market experience. It's a proper working market and all the better for it.

Good to know

Parking is genuinely chaotic — treat it as a sport and manage your expectations.
Car park entry is $3 cash only, collected at the gate.
No traffic wardens inside just at the entry points, so it's every person for themselves. Go for the produce, not the parking.
Held at Avondale Racecourse — Sunday mornings only, rain or shine.
