Why go

Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki is New Zealand's largest art institution and most compelling visual arts experience — home to more than 17,500 works spanning seven centuries. Enter through majestic kauri columns into four floors of light, airy galleries featuring the world's largest permanent collection of New Zealand art, alongside significant holdings of Māori and Pacific art and international painting, sculpture and print collections dating from the 11th century to today. Free permanent collection, genuinely world-class programming, and one of the loveliest buildings in the city — a Gallery visit has a way of drawing you in and before long an hour has quietly become two.

What to expect

The permanent collection is free and dedicated rooms cover Māori and New Zealand culture alongside international works from across the centuries. The Robertson Gift collection is a particular highlight, bringing together pieces by some of the most significant names in art history. Charges only apply when a ticketed special exhibition is showing.
The building itself is part of the experience. Award-winning architecture merges the original 1887 French Renaissance façade with a striking contemporary addition, perched on the edge of Albert Park right in the city centre. The café is excellent, and the rooftop terrace is a lovely place to pause mid-visit and take it all in.
The Gallery sits at the top of a genuinely beautiful pocket of the CBD. Directly across Kitchener Street is Fingers — Aotearoa's foremost contemporary jewellery gallery, showing pieces from many of the same designers whose work sits in the Art Gallery's own collection. And across the road just down Women's Suffrage mural and Staircase you reach Lorne Street — a small lane lined with tea houses, independent coffee shops and small eateries, a lovely way to extend the day.
