Sky Tower
About
At 328 metres tall, the Sky Tower has dominated the Auckland skyline since 1997 and remains the city’s most recognisable landmark. Standing at its base and looking up is impressive enough — but it’s the view from the observation decks that stays with you. On a clear day you can see up to 80 kilometres in every direction, taking in the Waitematā and Manukau Harbours, the Hauraki Gulf islands, and the 53 volcanic cones scattered across the city below.
The main observation deck sits at 186 metres, with 360° panoramic views and glass floors for those who want an extra dose of vertigo. The Sky Deck sits higher again at the 60th floor for even more expansive views. Both are included with general admission.
For dining, Orbit 360° is one of Auckland’s most unique restaurant experiences — a revolving restaurant that rotates slowly enough that you won’t notice the movement or feel any discomfort, but over the course of a meal your view gradually shifts and changes around you. It’s a lovely effect, and the food is genuinely good. SkyBar is Auckland’s highest bar and a particularly good spot for sunset drinks — book well in advance as it fills up fast, especially at golden hour.
For the thrill seekers, the SkyJump is a 192 metre controlled free fall from the outside of the tower, while the SkyWalk takes you around the outer rim 192 metres above the street, tethered but fully exposed to the elements. Both are ticketed separately and bookable on the website.
Insider tip: Sunset is the most popular time to visit — book the SkyBar or Orbit 360° well in advance if you want a seat for golden hour. For observation deck visits, a clear weekday morning is often quieter and the light is beautiful.
