Mother
Why go
Mother is the bakery in Grey Lynn that has properly arrived — one of Auckland's most quietly confident recent openings, from the team behind Honey Bones, Lilian and Hotel Ponsonby, anchored by baker-chef Petra Galler of Butter Butter fame. It runs two distinct operations under one Richmond Road roof: a bakery-café by day, seven days a week from 6:45am, and a natural wine bar with a considered small-plates menu Tuesday to Saturday evenings. The focaccia sandwiches are the standout by day — Mediterranean fillings on properly seasoned focaccia with crunchy sea salt on top — and the pastry case is genuinely worth the visit alone. Beautifully designed interiors blend stainless steel with butter-yellow tones and earthy elements, with outdoor seating under the awning that fills with locals from open.
What to expect
By day, a walk-in bakery-café with excellent coffee, considered pastries, and the focaccia sandwiches that have quickly become the reason regulars keep coming back. Expect it to be busy — Grey Lynn has adopted this place.
From 4:30pm Tuesday to Saturday, the room shifts into natural wine bar mode. The menu leans small and shared — Mother bread with whipped butter, crudo with citrus and buttermilk, steak tartare, poached mussels with chimichurri, wild prawns with jalapeño and burnt butter, ravioli with ricotta and tomato butter. The cocktail list is short and precise (dirty martini with smoked olives, earl grey clarified white negroni, pineapple-cucumber-jalapeño margarita). The wine list is where it really opens up — Italian Soave and Sicilian whites through French Chablis and Burgundy Chardonnay to serious New Zealand and Old World reds, with Prosecco and Champagne by the glass. Non-alcoholic options are treated with the same care.
There's also a proper catering operation — team lunches, client meetings, celebrations — handled via email with 48 hours' notice on most items.
