Dulcie
Why go
Dulcie is one of Devonport's loveliest daytime spots — a bright, airy space in a historic building with very high ceilings, just across the road from the harbour. The view's a real one: anchored boats sitting close to shore, the light shifting across the water. It's an easy, flat waterfront walk from the Devonport ferry, and a natural stop on the way to the Torpedo Bay Navy Museum. Open from 7am, it catches the early Devonport rhythm — runners and cyclists stopping for coffee and counter food, regulars settling in for breakfast, dog walkers passing by, the cold-swimmers heading home. In autumn, when it's still dark at opening, you can watch the sky turn pink behind North Head from your table.
What to expect
daytime eatery done properly. The interior is bright and airy without feeling stark, with acoustic panels on the ceiling that keep the noise down even when it's busy. Expect generous servings, really good coffee, and food that punches well above the average brunch spot — the pancakes are a standout. Seating spreads beyond the dining room — covered tables out front, more out the back — so there's room to settle in whatever the weather. There's a kids' menu and a proper toy box for the littlies, and the staff are genuinely lovely. It's breakfast and brunch only, but the space also opens up for private functions.
